I was born in Portugal, in a small town where the values of hard work and perseverance were ingrained in me from a young age. Growing up, I was always curious, constantly asking questions and seeking to understand how things worked. My parents, though not businesspeople themselves, nurtured my curiosity and encouraged my love for learning.
I was particularly fascinated by the way systems and processes fit together, much like the pieces of a puzzle. This natural inclination led me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, one of Portugal’s top engineering schools. It was during these formative years that I began to see the connections between engineering principles and the broader business world. The ability to design and build something from the ground up—whether it’s a bridge or a business—captivated me.
Building a Foundation: The Early Career Years
After graduating, I embarked on my career at the age of 28, diving headfirst into the world of project management. My early roles involved overseeing large-scale infrastructure projects, where I quickly learned the importance of leadership, strategy, and meticulous planning. These experiences were invaluable, teaching me how to manage resources effectively, lead diverse teams, and navigate the inevitable challenges that arise in complex projects.
During this time, I also began to develop a keen interest in technology and its potential to revolutionize the business world. I saw firsthand how technological advancements could streamline operations, improve efficiency, and create competitive advantages. This realization planted the seeds for what would become a significant focus in my later career: IT consulting.
